The First Distinction

A singularity is the definition of nothing. Begin with the simplest thing that could exist. A point resolves to a sphere. The minimum package for any existence.

The appearance of the first thing brings with it everything required for its existence. Ideas are physical and carry energy. That energy of the entailments expands immediately to what is required to exist.

This is inflation.

Nothing Is Touching Anything

Right now, stop reading and press your finger firmly against this page or your screen. Feel that resistance: solid, immediate, undeniable. Your senses are telling you that two separate objects are making contact, that matter is touching matter.

Your senses are wrong.

Nothing is touching anything. What you’re feeling is an electromagnetic standoff. The electron clouds in your fingertip and the electron clouds in the screen are holding each other at bay across distances measured in billionths of a meter.

The sensation of “solid contact” is your nervous system’s interpretation of a dynamic equilibrium between repulsive fields, a relationship rather than a collision. There is no touch. There is only the appearance of touch, assembled in real time by your brain from information about forces it can never directly perceive.

That’s the deepest illusion in existence. And it runs all the way down.

Color, perhaps, offers the clearest case; it exists nowhere until particular wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation meet the particular photoreceptors in your particular visual system. The apple carries reflectance properties. The color is the meeting.

Structural coloration makes this even more precise. The Morpho butterfly’s wings contain no blue pigment. Their iridescent blue exists entirely in the geometry of microscopic, layered structures that interact with light through interference.

Remove the structure and the color vanishes completely.

Why We Test

Questions We Could Not Ask Before

We have an idea. We know it is not completely wrong, because most of what it rests on is the Standard Model, among the most thoroughly tested theories in science. What we do not yet know is which of the new parts will hold. The path toward that answer will raise questions we could not have formulated without asking the first ones. That is why we test: not to win or lose, but to find out.

Michael K. Baines

An aerospace engineer who began in refrigeration systems, moved into aircraft refrigeration and then into other aircraft systems. He worked on business jets for Dassault Falcon Jet, Gulfstream in Savannah, Georgia, and Bombardier's Global 6000 and 7000, taught engineering systems at Boeing, and was a flight test structural engineer at Mitsubishi on certification testing for what would have been its first in-house regional aircraft. Certification is where every claim about a design is stated in advance and then checked against test data. This book is tested the same way. He is an independent researcher based in Bangkok and founded the Ic² Research Institute.
